End of lease & vacate cleaning checklist: Interior

  • Clean and empty wardrobes, cupboards, shelving and drawers
  • Check all globes are working – clean light fittings and switches
  • Wipe clean all window ledges, skirting boards, doors and handles
  • Clean all windows, sliding doors and fly screens inside and outside
  • Clean all air conditioner vents, wash and dry filters
  • Remove dust and cobwebs throughout the property
  • Clean ceiling fan blades and light (if required)
  • Clear door and window tracks
  • Clean all blinds
  • Wash or dry-clean curtains
  • Clean and wipe over all switches
  • If renting a furnished property ensure all furnishings are cleaned

  • Clean oven walls, racks, grill and leave cleaned trays inside. Elbowgrease cleaning tip: To clean your oven without all the harsh chemicals, mix half a cup of baking soda with water (adjust ratios as required until you have a smooth paste). Spread the paste on your oven walls, avoiding the heating elements in an electric oven. Let the paste sit overnight before removing, then spray with vinegar. A foam should form; simply wipe this away
  • Remove all stove top stains and clean thoroughly. If a glass stove top use the appropriate tool.
  • Clean range hood and wash filters, ensuring the overhead light is working
  • Clean microwave. Elbowgrease cleaning tip: Place 1 cup of water and some lemon, lime, or orange slices (squeeze a little juice from the fruit slices into the water) or several tablespoons of white or apple cider vinegar in a microwave-safe bowl and place it inside the microwave. Turn it on high power for several minutes until the mixture boils and the window is steamy. Let it cool for 5 minutes before opening the door, remove the bowl and wipe the inside clean with a sponge.
  • Clean dishwasher, including rubbers, door and filter. Elbowgrease cleaning tip: For a sparkling dishwasher, our cleaning tip Place a cup of white vinegar in a dishwasher-safe container on the upper rack of the machine. Run the dishwasher through a hot-water cycle. This will wash away grease and grime and remove musty odours.
  • Clear food and debris from sink holes, plugs and taps
  • Wash all counter tops, benches and surface areas
  • Wash clean the inside and outside of all cupboards
  • Clean inside the refrigerator and freezer, removing all food. Elbowgrease cleaning tip: Spray the inside of the fridge with a solution of vinegar and water, concentrating on soiled areas and let it soak in. Wash the removed shelves and drawers with warm soapy water and set them aside to dry. Head back to the fridge and wipe everything down with a rag. Dry shelves and drawers and return them to the fridge.

  • Clean shower and shower screens. Elbowgrease cleaning tip: Pour white vinegar into a spray bottle. You may wish to dilute the vinegar up to 50/50 with water and add a squeeze of lemon for a fresh scent. Drench the glass surfaces with the vinegar solution. Leave for a few minutes then work over the stains with a soft sponge or soft-bristled brush.
  • Clean shower heads. Elbowgrease cleaning tip: Fill a plastic bag with enough vinegar to submerge the nozzle, and tie the bag in place. Leave the nozzle to soak overnight to remove all residue and calcium build-up.
  • Ensure facilities and fixtures are free of soap residue and mould
  • Clean and disinfect bath(s), vanity and toilets
  • Wash all surfaces, including tiled areas and bench tops
  • Remove mould from tiles, grout, ceiling and walls. Elbowgrease cleaning tip: At the first signs of mouldon the grout, mix equal parts distilled white vinegar and water in a spray bottle and generously spray the affected area. Wait for 30 minutes, then scrub the surfaces with a bristle brush and rinse with warm water. For best results, repeat the process several times.
  • Dust and polish towel rails and toilet roll holders
  • Clean sinks, drain holes, plugs and taps
  • Clean mirrors and ceiling fans including extraction ducts in apartments
  • Clean dryer and remove all lint from around the dryer

  • Remove dust or cobwebs from walls, window sills in all outdoor areas
  • Cut or mow the lawn, trim the edges and remove all weeds
  • Remove any pet faeces and repair any damage caused by pets
  • Clean swimming pool (if the property has one)
  • Clear out the mail box
  • Ensure outdoor lighting is working and cleaned
  • Sweep garage, driveway and remove any dirt or oil marks
  • Remove all rubbish, empty and wash household rubbish bins
  • Hose down garage door and ensure the remote is left in the property
  • Clean the veranda or patio, including the BBQ and all outdoor furniture
